Castello Lake - Pontechianale
The Castello Lake is an artificial water basin created by the the large dam built in 1942 to power the Casteldelfino hydroelectric plant bloking the course of the Varaita Torrent.
The reservoir, also called with the name Pontechianale Lake, is located at 1600 meters above sea level, begins at the hamlet of Castello and ends at Pontechianale town.
It has an elongated shape and a capacity of 12 million cubic meters of water. To realize it was necessary to sacrifice the houses and the parish of the Chiesa hamlet, that were moved further upstream.
Until a few years ago the bell tower of the old church of San Pietro in Vincoli emerged from its waters, then collapsed and it is no longer visible, but in times of severe drought the ruins of the houses still sprout.
The flat shore of the lake is flanked by the road that leads to the Agnello Pass, while the other, more sloping, is covered by forests.
The lake has also become a tourist attraction because of its bathing waters and the walks that you can do in the surrounding area, including the lakeside promenade that can be traveled over even at night because it is fully lit.
It 's also frequented by Windsurf and Kitesurf lovers and, in winter, its icy waters offer wonderful views.
