Monteoliveto - Cortemilia
The Sanctuary of Madonna dei Monti in Niella Belbo
Not far from the inhabited center of Cortemilia rises the hill of Monteoliveto one of the most beautiful balconies in the Alta Langa from which you can enjoy not only the view over the city and the Pieve of Santa Maria placed at its feet, but also of the Bormida and Uzzone Valleys.
In ancient times on this hill was located the Fortress of Cheronzio, one of the fortresses that surrounded and protected the city of Cortemilia.
The name Monteoliveto is probably due to the past presence of Benedictine monks from Oliveto who introduced the construction of terraces with dry stone strips in order to cultivate along the slopes and avoid erosion.
This technique is still visible and also distinguishes the surrounding hills.
From the Pieve a paved path spirals up around the hill and reaches the top where is located the Cascina, home of the Regional Ecomuseum of Terracing and Vine.
Here are organized workshops about typical products and about terraces as well as being a guesthouse for students and researchers.
Around the Cascina of Monteoliveto there is an orchard with traditional varieties, vineyards and fields with rare or endangered crops.
This is an important place for the conservation of local identity.
