Church of San Lorenzo - Castiglione Falletto
Located in the city center at the opposite side of the access to the Castiglione Falletto Castle, the Church of San Lorenzo is the main religious building of the town.
It was built in the Romanesque style starting from a pre-existing chapel belonging to the Castle in order to replace the old parish church of S. Lorenzo, which became insufficient and uncomfortable as it was placed outside the village.
The neo-Gothic lines that we can admire today date back to interventions during 1893 when the interior was decorated by the Finati brothers, painters of Alba.
The exposed brick facade has salient features with three splayed stone portals, two small on the sides and a central large one surmounted by a polylobed rose window and a stone cross placed high at the top of the tympanum.
The pilasters are plastered and end with stone niches, while the slopes are very particular because they are defined by a beautiful arched frame.
As you can already guess from the façade, the interior of the Church of San Lorenzo has three aisles with cross vaults decorated in shades of blue and gold.
Particular is the height of the central nave, with a larger axle volume than the lateral ones and the chapels that flank them.
The chapels are six and host small altars or confessionals.
On the side altar dedicated to Sant'Andrea you can admire admire an eighteenth-century oval altarpiece depicting the Immaculate Conception, probably the work of the painter Pietro Paolo Operti.
The presbytery of the Church of San Lorenzo has a quadrangular plan and houses a wooden altar resting on a marble base; however wide as the central nave is covered by a ribbed vault.
