Le sue origini, secondo documenti dell'anno 1001, risalgono all'XI secolo.
Castiglione Falletto Castle - Langhe
In the town of Castiglione Falletto, the center of Barolo production whose hills are part of the Unesco Heritage, stands the Castiglione Falletto Castle, one of the oldest in the area.
Its origins, according to documents of the year 1001, date back to the 11th century. It isn't known who built it, but it was "Castrum et Villa" owned by the Marquisate of Saluzzo.
It is a defensive building with a double wall. The internal one supports the keep and the main house, enclosing the garden on three sides, while the external one was used as a bastion and was initially lower than it is now.
The current appearance is due to the intervention, in the 14th century, by the Falletti family, then owner of the property, who kept it until the end of the 17th century. After them, the manor passed to the Caramelli and Clarotto families and finally, in the second half of the 18th century, it became the property of Giuseppe Cerutti, a poet, who restored it.
In 1601, with the Treaty of Lyon, the Castiglione Falletto Castle passed to the Savoys who used it as a military outpost until 1631, when peace was restored on the territory and the building was converted into a residence.
Many families followed one another on the property of the manor. Since 1870 it belongs to the Vassallo family and since 2015 an agreement with the municipality, first, and the Cavallotto family, then, has allowed the start of conservative restorations in view of the opening to the public.
The Castiglione Falletto Castle looks like a massive construction with an irregular plan due to the shape of the land.
From it, two large cylindrical towers and a further high central round tower rise at the corners which, presumably, together with the western sleeve, constitutes the oldest part.
These towers characterize the castle in a particular way, because it is the only manor in the area that doesn't have the keep or corner towers or turrets with a square plan.
The towers are connected to each other by a complex-plan building with a simple and smooth facade.
Being a private residence, the Castiglione Falletto Castle can only be visited at certain times of the year.
