Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli - Bra
One of the most interesting churches in Bra, a town in the Cuneo province well known for its delicious sausage and for "Cheese", a gastronomic event, is the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
This religious building is located not far from the Rocca Gardens, on the hill overlooking XX Settembre Square.
Built in 1742 next to the Convent of the Minor Observants, who officiated there, the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is also known by the name "fratini" church since in 1906 when it was bought by the Capuchin Fathers who opened their own seminary here and provided for its restoration.
Before that date the Church was requisitioned by the Sabaudo State and was later sold to a private individual who turned it into a military housing, ammunition depot and salt warehouse.
The building structure has an eccentric and massive elliptical shape aligned across the road axis. The eccentricity of the construction derives from the fact that instead of having, like all the churches with an elliptical plan built after the Counter-Reformation, the long axis of the ellipse oriented on the longitude, it is placed transversally.
The architect of the project is not precisely known, even if someone attributes it to the engineer Pietro Giacomo Ronco, already engaged at that time in the realization of other city works.
The exterior of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in bare masonry appears to be unfinished and access to it takes place through a recently built double staircase.
The interiors are decorated with frescoes by Pietro Paolo Operti, a local painter, and the nave is surrounded by six chapels and covered by a concentric vault.
