Caldera Castle - Monesiglio
Monesiglio, a village with very ancient origins, is guarded by the Caldera Castle, a massive building that stands out on the fields and the course of the Bormida river.
The original construction that dates back to the 13th century was built by the Caldera family who kept it for a long time. Brought as a dowry to the Saluzzo of Valgrana family, it passed from hand to hand until it was purchased by the Curia.
Erected with defensive functions, the Caldera Castle was initially made up of a square keep, a low square tower and an elongated building that ran along the crest of the hill.
During the eighteenth century the castle was transformed into a noble residence gaining several valuable architectural elements, such as the frescoes attributed to Antonio Occello from Ceva.
Noteworthy are the central tower decorated with dovetail merlons, the pointed gates of the courtyard, the Hall of Arms, the Armory, the Ballroom and the Red Chamber.
