The Romanesque San Sebastiano Chapel
The main attraction of Bergolo, the small stone village in Langa, is undoubtedly the San Sebastiano Chapel.
This small building is located high on the hill overlooking Bergolo, the highest point of a fortification where the local population took refuge in case of attacks, and offers a beautiful panorama on the Langhe hills and the Bormida Valley.
Built in the 22nd century as a cemetery chapel, it was the first parish church of the town. It was consecrated to San Sebastiano, protector of the contagions, so that he kept the plague away from Bergolo.
The San Sebastiano Chapel is one of the most interesting Romanesque-style religious buildings in the Langhe.
Placed on a stone base, it was built in local sandstone. Its gabled facade is simple, according to the canons of Romanesque architecture.
The semicircular apse is divided externally by a semi-column with carved capital and by two small single-lancet windows and has a motif of hanging arches that also runs along the side elevations.
The interior is built with exposed stone.
