Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine - Prunetto
Located on a slight hill overlooking the Castello Scarampi del Carretto di Pruney, the Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine is a church of medieval origins probably dating back to the 14th century.
The building was enlarged and remodeled several times, so much so that it is assumed that the original entrance was located in the north side and it is documented that the part where the main altar is now built was erected in 1600.
The Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine was, until 1904, the parish church of Prunetto entitled to San Lorenzo Martire.
Abandoned following the construction of a new larger church it fell into disrepair and remained so until 1928 when the restorations began, giving life to the current Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine . In 1999 the frescoes inside were restored, bringing to light the paintings dating back to the 15th century, including the pictorial cycle designed by the painter Segurano Cigno.
The access to the church is via a short staircase that reaches the rather simple gable façade characterized by two lateral pilasters and a small rose window with two small windows on the sides.
The entire building is gabled, with simple lines in the Romanesque style, in split stone and with a stone slab roof.
The interior has three naves with a single apse in the main nave.
What characterizes them are the countless frescoes. Noteworthy in the first bay of the right nave are: Sant'Antonio Abate and Santa Caterina of Alessandria, an Assumption, the four Evangelists seated on stools and some scenes with Sant'Antonio.
In the second bay of the right nave you can admire a Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist, Christ the Pantocrator enclosed within a red sun with meandering rays.
The third bay is embellished with frescoes of the announced Virgin, the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian and a series of saints.
Other saints such as St.Peter, St.Bernardo da Chiaravalle, St.Antonio Abate and St.Bernardino da Siena are depicted in the left nave.
The third bay of the left nave is the one that houses the most relevant works and that concern the frescoes of Segurano Cigna de Monteregali. There are several figures depicted as the Crucifixion, a Madonna enthroned with the Child holding a bird in one hand, the representations of the four Virtues: Charity, Temperance, Hope, Fortitude, each with its own cartouche, an Christ in almond with the sides evangelists sitting on stools.
The Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine can be visited on summer Sundays from July to September.
