Tour of the Valscura Lakes in Gesso Valley
The Tour of the Valscura Lakes is one of the classic trail that can be done within the Natural Park of the Maritime Alps in the Gesso Valley.
Traversed every season by hundreds of hikers, it allows you to enter in the heart of the Park and explore one of its most beautiful areas, not only because it is a historic place where the kings of the House of Savoy had elected them as a hunting reserve, but also from a naturalistic and geological point of view.
Valasco and Valscura Valleys were carved out by glaciers and are surrounded by spectacular peaks that reach 3000 meters.
The Piano del Valasco is just the bottom of an ancient lake filled with alluvial debris and organic substance that has evolved into a peat bog, one of the most delicate high-altitude wetlands in the Maritime Alps.
Although the Tour of the Valscura Lakes is a long itinerary, it is still an easily passable route that meets 2 refuges, winds in part along old rolling stock, former military mule tracks, dotted with some fortifications, and traced paths built for the royals and which touches several enchanting lakes of glacial origin.
The route starts from the Terme di Valdieri (1385 m.) where you need to leave your car in the convenient paid parking (3 euros in the summer months).
The path runs along the old military road that enters the Valasco Valley with a slight difference in height and, with numerous hairpin bends, allows you to reach the Piano del Valasco.
It is preferable, however, to shorten the route, taking the path on the left at the first bend that runs close to the stream, cutting several bends of the former military road while meeting it at different points until it is finally followed after passing a series of artificial steps.
The arrival at the Piano del Valasco is announced by a small waterfall on the left and by a suggestive green area among the pines where the stream flows before diving into the valley.
Nearby it is also possible to see an erratic boulder called the "Tomb of Merlin" from the name of the court magician of Galeazzo Sforza who, fallen from grace after predicting the death of the duke, took refuge here in the wilderness putting his scientific knowledge to service of the valley dwellers.
As you continue on the wide grassy plateau, becomes increasingly visible the Royal Hunting House of the King (1735 meters) , now transformed into a Refuge.
From here the route continues, leaving the beautiful turreted building on the right and climbs gently until it reaches a wooden bridge over the river.
We do not cross the stream, but follow the marked trail that follows the watercourse and which climbs up to join the former military dirt road 452.
The itinerary continues in a sparse larch grove, passing a couple of streams and offering a panoramic view of the valley.
Ignoring the detour that, near a large larch (1996 meters), leads directly to the Refuge Questa, continue also crossing a short section in the tunnel and follow the mule track built in the '30s that goes deeper and deeper into Valscura Valley.
After about 2 hours of walking from Pian del Valasco we finally reach the lower Valscura Lake (2274 meters), the first of the Tour of the Valscura Lakes.
Near the stretch of water you can see the remains of some military buildings built in the nineteenth century as a depot for ammunition, explosives and artillery and as a shelter for the soldiers who were in this strategic place to protect the French pass of the Bassa del Drous.
The Lower Lake of Valscura is the largest in the valley and its waters reflect the peaks of the Testa del Malinvern and the Cima di Tavels. Behind it stands the massive Argentera.
If you also want to see the upper lakes of Valscura, you must skirt the lake on the right and follow the path that climbs to the Bassa del Drous for about 40 minutes.
The Tour of the Valscura Lakes continues, however, passing the outlet of the lower lake and following the path that, with some traverses, crosses a rocky promontory.
From here begins a spectacular stretch of route, an incredible paved stretch that crosses a detrital valley and large stony ground and reaches Lake of Claus (2344 meters) in half an hour.
In our opinion, this is the most picturesque area of the itinerary dotted with small lakes that precede this lake of glacial origin made suggestive by its sinuous shapes and by the islet that characterizes it.
Its waters reflect the Testa del Claus (2889 meters), a granite mountain on the watershed between Italy and France.
After a stop in this magnificent place, you resume your journey and shortly after the lake you leave the mule track and take the path to the right that climbs over a rocky ridge and then quickly descends to the Refuge Questa (2388 meters) and to the adjacent Portette Lake, the last of the Tour of the Valscura Lakes.
Located at an altitude of 2361 meters, of glacial origin, it is considered one of the deepest in the Maritime Alps and its waters, when they are not frozen, are of a dark blue color.
From its banks the view sweeps over the peaks of Portette, Claus, Tablesses and Prefouns, Monte Matto and the Savoy Crest.
The Refue Questa is a small shelter managed in the summer months and obtained in 1925 from a military barracks.
It is located on a rocky hump on the north shore with an incredible view that embraces the entire Valasco Valley and has for years been a starting point in the heart of the Natural Park of the Maritime Alps for high mountain excursions and alpine crossings.
For the return, retrace the last stretch of the access path to Portette Lake and, ignoring the road that leads to Claus, descend along the mule track which, directly and on a steep slope, reaches the large larch, thus intercepting the military road uphill.
At this point all that remains is to retrace the steps of the outward journey towards the Piano del Valasco and the parking area in Terme di Valdieri.
The Tour of the Valscura Lakes is a hiking itinerary of about 20 km, with a difference in height of just over 1000 meters and which can take up to 6 hours of walking.
