Ruins Lake - Entracque
Located in Gesso Valley, inside the Maritime Alps Natural Park, the Ruins Lake is a natural basin that was created due to an ancient landslide that blocked the outflow of the Gesso torrent that descends from the Chiotas Lake to the valley. From this event it also owes its name.
Easily accessible by car, it can be reached from Entracque, passing the artificial basin of the Piastra and going up the Ruins Valley.
The Ruins Lake is located at 1539 meters above sea level. and its original dimensions were reduced following the construction works of the Piastra-Chiotàs hydroelectric plant. The lake now also serves as a pumping tank for the two basins located downstream and upstream.
This is a very fishy body of water, so much so that it has become a Fishing Reserve and rainbow trout, brown trout and char are periodically introduced.
Only two sides of the Ruins Lake are accessible, while the others are covered with stones. On the free shores there are the fisherman's house and a parking lot with a large picnic area that make the place attractive not only to fishing lovers but also to families and groups looking for tranquility.
The basin is the starting point for the excursion to the above Genova Refuge, to the dam and to the Chiotas Lake, to the Brocan Lake and to the Fenestrelle Pass which connects the Ruins Valley with the Gesso della Barra Valley and the Ellena-Soria Refuge.
The basin where the Ruins Lake is located, at the beginning of spring, is also the place of exceptional meetings. It is not unusual, in fact, to cross herds of chamois and ibex that graze here taking advantage of the lack of human presence.
