L'Anello Bousset, passeggiata autunnale in Valle Gesso
Hiking along Bousset Valley in the Ampi Marittime Natural Park - Gesso Valley
The Gesso Valley offers a variety of excursions of different difficulties that allow you to explore its magnificent territory made up of peaks, lakes, waterfalls, woods and wild landscapes included within the Alpi Marittime Natural Park, the largest protected area in Piedmont.
If you are looking for a medium length trail, but with a moderate height difference, the Bousset Ring Trail might be a good choice.
The Bousset Ring Trail is about 17 km long path which runs along both sides of the Bousset Valley and which allows, with an unmissable detour, to reach the Tancias Waterfall, one of the most beautiful in the area.
The excursion, particularly pleasant in spring and autumn because of the colors of nature, also allows you to cross picturesque alpine villages and see a particular artwork of Land Art.
The Bousset Ring Trail begins at the sixteenth-century Chapel of San Rocco in Entracque.
Located just outside the town, in the Molino hamlet, it was built near the old mill on the road that led to France and is very popular in the past for trade.
Dedicated to the patron saint of the plague, this religious building has a facade with a large fresco depicting San Rocco and San Sebastiano, while inside there are a 17th century altarpiece depicting the Nativity between the two Saints and two paintings representing the "Miracle of Turin" and "The Last Supper" attributable to the Entracque master of ex voto, active in the area from about 1722 to 1750.
From the chapel the route follows the asphalted road for a short distance, crosses the Ponte della Sartaria and continues along the Strada Comunale Esterate up to the first bend where begins the dirt path.
The route gently climbs the valley, always running near the Bousset stream, among shady woods, until it reaches the Porcera Bridge.
From the large car park begins another itinerary, which enters in the Sabbione Valley, an ancient salt road that leads to the the border with France.
The Bousset Ring Trail continues across the Porcera Bridge (1078 m .), a modern connection rebuilt in the early 2000s after a flood.
The route resumes on an asphalted road, passes Tetti Porcera, the last inhabited center of Bousset Valley, and reaches the Trinità hamlet.
Here it is worth to linger on the small chapel of the Trinity, an evidently remodeled seventeenth-century building, and on the Locanda del Sorriso, built in 1939 as an elementary school by the will of Queen Elena of Savoy. Granted for use by the Alpi Marittime Natural in 1985 it has been destined to a receptive structure after a precise restructuring.
In the lawn behind the oven and in front of the chapel it is possible to admire an original artwork of Land Art. It was created as part of the CClimatt project on climate changes by the artist Paola Politano who entitled it "Flowers at risk".
Beyond the built-up area the Bousset Ring Trail continues on asphalt turning right and entering the Prer Valley, where it begins to gain altitude until it becomes a dirt path that leads to Tetti Prer, a small village with beautiful renovated wood and stone huts.
After the hamlet, observing some valuable details over the houses, the path continues halfway, among fir and beech trees, up the Caire dell’Uglia. This is the highest section of the entire itinerary, but which offers incredible glimpses of the Bousset Valley, especially in autumn with the peaks of the mountains already covered with snow and the larch trees with flaming colors.
Going down the valley again, you reach a crossroads and, neglecting the direction that leads to Tetto Dietro Colletto, you can go down the Rio Valley along a path that joins the Sentiero di Camilla, a very popular hike, dedicated to Camilla Bessone, a 16-year-old girl from Cuneo who lost her life with other four boys in a tragic car accident in Grana Valley, above Castelmagno, on 11 August 2020.
This detour allows you to reach the Tancias Waterfall, a small natural wonder that is particularly suggestive during the winter when part of the jet of water and the lake below are frozen.
Returning to the dirt road, that also offers a beautiful view of the Uja di Santa Lucia tower, a limestone block of about 50 meters that slightly detaches from the Caire dell'Uglia, you go down to the valley until you meet the path that crosses Tetti Colletta Soprana.
Once you reach Tetti Violino, take the path that descends directly to Entracque near the Chapel of Sant’Antonio. At this point it is enough to cross the alleys of the town center to reach Molino, the starting point of the trail.
The Bousset Ring Trail is a 17 km long hiking itinerary, with a total altitude difference of about 400 meters and which can take up to 5 hours of walking.
