Autumn at Capanna Ussolo in Maira Valley
If you are looking for a nice autumn walk to do in Maira Valley, we recommend the ascent to Capanna Ussolo a destination that guarantees an easy route, suitable for everyone, and the possibility of seeing the bright colors of the foliage.
Capanna Ussolo is an old building at 1830 meters used by hikers as a refuge until, during the winter between 2008 and 2009, an avalanche seriously damaged it and it was never restored.
Managed by the section of Dronero Cuneo Cai, the Capanna Ussolo was inaugurated in 1964 obtaining it from an old hut. Despite being a rather spartan refuge for trekkers traveling along the Vallone, it could accommodate up to 9 people and was equipped with a kitchen, wood stove and some furniture.
The route starts from the parking lot in front of Ussolo Church, a small enchanting hamlet to which, due to the beautiful architectural corners it still retains and because it is used as a location for the film "The Wind makes its round", it is worth giving look.
From here, take the paved road that passes next to the religious building and which soon reaches a crossroads. We choose a path that goes up to the right in the woods and that follows, sometimes intersecting it, the paved road that goes to Borgata Vallone
After passing the few houses in the hamlet, the path opens wide, crosses pastures and begins to offer magnificent views. Thus we leave behind the thickest part of the deciduous forest and the first larches begin to appear.
We continue to climb admiring the beauty of autumn colors and passing Grangia Draio and Grange Podio until we reach a votive pillar. Here we decide to continue the path for the Capanna Ussolo following the cart track, leaving out the path more vertical on the right and which we will use on the return. Both arrive at Grange del Passo at 1707 meters.
Reach it we stop to admire the view of the surrounding peaks before leaving for the next destination: Grange Chioligiera. From here begins the most tiring point uphill, but soon we are at Località Grangette where we find Capanna Ussolo.
Once you have reached this point, the excursion could be extended by climbing up to Colletto Sarasin from which you can enjoy a beautiful panorama. The route is part of the Occitan Route, a 177 km trek in 14 stages that crosses the entire Maira Valley.
After a short stop we resume the way back with two small variations: at Grange del Passo we take the steep GTA path that descends directly to the votive pillar and a few steps after this we take the track that goes down to the valley on the right.
This track turns out to be quite steep, but relatively faster downhill. Finally, among low bushes and junipers, we arrive in Ussolo, completing the ring.
